🔌 What Are 240V Motor Tails?

240V motor tails are the power lead that comes out of a blind or awning motor, designed to be connected directly to mains power by a licensed electrician. They are the final connection point between the motor and the building’s electrical system.

Tails vary depending on the motor manufacturer and the control system being used. They are not “one size fits all” — the wiring configuration determines how the motor is controlled and how it integrates with switches, relays, or automation systems.

⚙️ Tail Types & Configurations

Motor tails come in several configurations:

Two‑core tails

  • Used for basic motors with simple up/down control
  • No earth conductor
  • Common in older or budget motors

Three‑core tails

  • The most common configuration
  • Includes active, neutral, and earth
  • Suitable for standard 240V motors with switch or relay control

Four‑core tails

  • Used for motors requiring separate directional control
  • Supports advanced switching or integration
  • Often used in motors with built‑in receivers or specialised automation setups

🔌 Molex vs Non‑Molex Tails

Manufacturers supply tails with or without Molex connectors.

Tails with Molex

  • Recommended wherever possible
  • Allows quick replacement or servicing of motors
  • Cleaner installation
  • Reduces the need for cutting and re‑terminating cables
  • Ideal for Somfy, Acmeda, and AOK motors

Tails without Molex

  • Hard‑wired directly
  • More labour for repairs
  • Common in older motors or low‑cost imports

Best practice: Use Molex tails whenever available — they make servicing significantly easier and reduce downtime.

  • All 240V tails must be terminated by a licensed electrician
  • Pre‑wire during construction or renovation is ideal
  • Tails are normally brought out at the head of the blind, behind a pelmet or fascia
  • Ensure the electrician understands the motor type (2‑core, 3‑core, 4‑core, Molex)
